The Organization

Goodwill of Southwestern Pennsylvania (Goodwill SWPA) provides a broad array of employment-related education and workforce development services, as well as human and social services for people with barriers to employment. People with developmental and/or intellectual disabilities, displaced workers, participants in welfare-to-work programs, people who are homeless, have limited work experience or education, job skills or training, veterans, youth and older workers, and people with criminal backgrounds all benefit from the programs and services offered by Goodwill SWPA.

Starting in Pittsburgh in 1919, the first local Goodwill SWPA clients gained work experience, self-reliance, and independence by repairing old furniture and clothing for resale at nominal prices in the agency’s thrift stores. Today, with over 1,200 employees, annual revenues of more than $60 million, and a service area that spans eight southwestern Pennsylvania counties and nine counties in north central West Virginia, Goodwill SWPA ranks as one of the largest Goodwill organizations in the United States. Goodwill SWPA boasts more than 30 stores and several other businesses to help to support its programs and to provide training and employment opportunities for clients. Critically, 90% all revenue from Goodwill stores – along with income from its other business units, salvage sales, contract work, rehabilitation grants and fees, and public support – goes directly to job-training services and equipment needed by people with disabilities and disadvantages. In addition, Goodwill SWPA’s employment services programs are accredited by CARF, an independent, non-profit accrediting body whose official certification is a mark of distinction among agencies that provide such services.

Eight key values are the foundation of Goodwill SWPA as a human services agency:

  • Belonging
  • Excellence
  • Potential
  • Caring
  • Honesty
  • Connection
  • Responsibility
  • Community

With tremendous growth opportunity in both mission delivery and financial outcomes, Goodwill SWPA is positioned to expand its role as a recognized leader in workforce development and services for people with special needs and barriers to employment. The agency’s recent Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Belonging (DEIB) program has provided learning opportunities at all levels of the organization including unconscious bias training, town hall meetings, and a DEIB Taskforce and shows a continued commitment to fostering a culture of belonging. In addition, the agency is strongly positioned to diversity fundraising with increased individual donations. With direction from the Board, Leadership, and Staff, as well as input from key stakeholders, Goodwill SWPA is committed to long-term excellence and continued mission-fulfillment.

The Opportunity

Goodwill SWPA seeks a confident and compassionate President & CEO who will be a proven champion of the individuals served by the agency. Goodwill SWPA strives to remain well positioned to expand its role as a recognized leader and community collaborator in workforce development services for people with barriers to employment and requires a leader who can meet these ideals.
