Alumni Theater Company creates bold theatrical work that gives a fresh voice to the experience of young Black artists and highlights their rich contribution to our community. Now in our 14th season of operation, ATC has built a stellar reputation in Pittsburgh as a theater company that produces professional-quality work that poignantly and powerfully expresses the Black teen experience.

Our Recent Achievements
On October 1, 2018, ATC opened The Bill Nunn Black Box Theater, which allowed us to grow in a number of ways. We have expanded into three ensembles: Young Artist (grades 6-9), Teen (grades 10-12), and Professional (post-high school) allowing ATC to create a greater variety of work. We almost doubled our number of productions each season and developed new programming for our members. We established the ATC Arts Management fellowship for ATC graduates who are interested in learning about this field. During the pandemic, ATC has done an outstanding job of continuing to work with our members in meaningful and safe ways.
Alumni Theater Company is seeking a new Executive Director that will take ATC to its next stage of growth. In this next chapter, ATC will gain national recognition as an institution that identifies, develops and trains talented, disciplined Black actors who are ready to work in a professional setting. ATC’s members will inspire teens throughout the country to achieve greatness and use their voices and talents to create change. ATC will strive to be a leader in a national community of Black teens that support each other’s achievements, efforts and existence.
What will you do?
ATC seeks a new Executive Director that will turn their broad vision of the future into a clear, strategic action plan. The ED will build and develop trust with stakeholders within ATC, the greater Pittsburgh community, external connections, partners, and funders in order to cultivate the resources needed to grow the organization. Until now, ATC has been led by the founding Executive Director and founding board. We are looking for someone with skills in leadership, building systems and operations, coaching and mentoring staff and ATC members, as well as financial and fundraising skills to lead ATC into the next phase. The founding Executive Director expects to stay on for a time in support of the transition and as Artistic Director.
Your Areas of Accountability
- Works with board and staff to ensure that the mission is fulfilled through programs, strategic planning, and community outreach.
- Works in partnership with the artistic director for the successful development and execution of ATC’s productions and programs.
- Report to and work closely with the Board of Directors to seek their involvement in strategic planning and fundraising, and to increase the overall visibility of the organization.
- Support and advocate for ATC’s programs to students, parents, funders, and external constituents.
- Provide leadership and supervision to ATC staff, artists, and contractors. 4
Fiscal Management and Performance
- Develops resources sufficient to ensure the financial health of the organization. Develops overall fundraising strategy and seeks other revenues necessary to support ATC’s mission.
- Monitors and maintains fiscal integrity of ATC which includes submission to the Board of a proposed annual budget and quarterly financial statements, which accurately reflect the financial condition of the organization.
- Creates financial control systems adhering to GAAP and best practices for managing nonprofit finances.
- Collaborates with board and staff to provide financial projects and ensure sound operation within the approved budget such as maximizing resource utilization, and maintaining the positive financial position of the organization.
- Day-to-day fiscal management such as monitoring cash flow, payroll, and vendor payments.
- Supervises completion of annual financial audit.
- Implements and supervises appropriate resources to ensure that the operations of the organization are well executed.
- Responsible for the hiring and retention of competent, qualified staff. Responsible for effective administration of ATC’s operations.
- Responsible for signing all notes, agreements, and other instruments made and entered into and on behalf of the organization.
- Supervise and collaborate with staff to create and implement a season schedule of productions, classes, workshops, and special events.
- Supervise building and equipment maintenance and repairs. Work with the landlord to address issues within the building.
- Establish employment and administrative policies and procedures for all functions and for the day-to-day operation of the nonprofit, human resources, fiscal, and governance.
- Draft, review and approve contracts for services.
Board Governance. Development, and External Relations
- Responsible for leading ATC in a manner that supports and guides the organization’s mission in partnership with the Board of Directors.
- Responsible for communicating effectively with the Board and providing, in a timely and accurate manner, all information necessary for the Board to function properly and to make informed decisions as a governing board.
- Develop and execute marketing and communications efforts to build a broader awareness of ATC’s programs and productions.
- Cultivate and maintain relationships with foundations, donors and sponsors Recruit and engage prospective board members for ATC.
- Create, cultivate, and steward an individual giving program.
- Manage all writing and reporting of grant applications including timelines, drafts of proposals, submission, and subsequent follow-ups with funders.
- In partnership with the Artistic Director, serve as ATC’s primary spokesperson to the organization’s constituents, the media and the general public.
- Establish and maintain relationships with various local, regional, and national organizations and utilize those relationships to strategically enhance ATC’s mission.
Who are we looking for?
- Interest and excitement to empower young, Black students and teenagers Knowledge of youth development.
- Knowledge of diversity, equity, inclusion values and principles.
- Ability to connect with students, parents, and educators in an effective and authentic manner.
- Transparent and high integrity leadership.
- Five or more years of senior nonprofit management experience.
- Experience and skill in working with a Board of Directors.
- High-level strategic thinking and planning. Ability to envision and convey the organization’s strategic future to the members, families, staff, board, and donors.
- Ability to effectively communicate the organization’s mission to donors, members, families and the overall community.
- Demonstrated ability to oversee and collaborate with staff.
- Active fundraising experience. Excellent donor relations skills and understanding of the funding community.
- Previous success in establishing relationships with individuals and organizations of influence including funders, partner agencies and volunteers.
- Solid organizational abilities, including planning, delegating, program development and task facilitation.
- Strong financial management skills, including budget preparation, analysis, decision making and reporting.
- Strong written and oral communication skills.
- Strong public speaking ability.
- Strong work ethic with a high degree of energy.
How much are we paying and what are the perks?
Salary: $75,000 – 85,000. Full-time, exempt. Additional work on weekends and in the evenings is required.
Benefits Package: Additional compensation provided for health, dental, and vision insurance. 15 days of personal time off (PTO) provided.
