Position Summary: Operations Manager

Responsible for the overall management of Oasis Community Kitchen and Everyday Café with the goal of ensuring the businesses’ revenue, profitability, effective expense management, quality standards and positive employee morale. Tasks include ordering, hiring, training, supervision, financial planning, maintaining sanitation standards, ensuring safety protocols in public areas and kitchen or beverage preparation areas, and monitoring overall food compliance standards.

Primary Roles & Responsibilities but are NOT limited to the following:

Marketing and sales:

  • Network with local food entrepreneurs to promote the rental of kitchen space
  • Network with local businesses and organizations to expand the catering of Everyday Café or to schedule events with catering at Oasis Community Kitchen
  • Negotiate contracts for kitchen use and catering
  • Develop and facilitate cooking classes – youth program, community programs, guest chefs delivering specialty courses

Supply ordering and inventory management:

  • Overview of Everyday Cafe ordering, ensuring correct pars and order minimums are being met to decease costs where possible
  • Organization and quality control of ordered products, utilizing the FIFO method
  • Estimate and respond to future needs for goods, smallwares, kitchen utensils and cleaning products for both kitchen and cafe
  • Perform monthly inventory on all cafe and kitchen inventory and adjust par levels as needed
  • Regularly review product quality and research new vendors
  • Control operational costs and identify measures to cut waste
  • Work to incorporate as many locally made products as possible
  • Shop for and pick up inventory as needed

Catering and food production:

  • Once kitchen is operational re-start catering operations, working to maximize profitability
  • Work with staff and kitchen clients to make as much cafe and catering food in-house

Cleanliness and organization:

  • Maintain and enforce cleaning schedules for kitchen clients and café staff
  • Oversee the training of kitchen and café personnel in safe operation of all kitchen and café equipment and utensils
  • Ensure that all equipment is kept clean and kept in excellent working condition through personal inspection and by following established preventative maintenance programs
  • Responsible for maintaining appropriate cleaning schedules for kitchen floors, mats, walls, hoods, other equipment and food storage areas at both the kitchen and cafe
  • Maintain maintenance contracts including trash, pest control, and kitchen towel rental
  • Implement policies and protocols that will maintain future kitchen and café operations

Budget preparation:

  • Work with the leadership team to develop an annual budget for Oasis Community Kitchen and Everyday Café
  • Maintain weekly and monthly income and cost reports
  • Checks supplier invoices and complete purchase authorizations
  • Suggest strategies to cut kitchen and café operations costs

Employee and client management:

  • Create schedules for kitchen employees and volunteers
  • Onboard new kitchen clients
  • Monitor client schedules, cleanliness, kitchen usage and address any concerns
  • Maintain open communication with kitchen clients and cafe staff, ensuring everyone is informed
  • Train new and current employees on proper customer service practices
  • Appraise staff performance and provide feedback to improve productivity

Technical Skills Needed:

  • Key Skills: Culinary skills and 3+ years of food management experience, MS Outlook, Word, Internet, Google Calendar, Google Docs, MS including Excel, applicable software, etc. required of a management professional
  • Managerial skills that support the ability to grow, manage and sell in a food environment including space rentals, leasing the kitchen facility, leveraging the Everyday Café as a potential store front for a food vendor, etc.
  • Knowledge consistent with food service management and ensuring the effective oversight of food related property and equipment

Qualifications and Requirements:

  • Experience growing and building a commercial kitchen, restaurant, catering or related business
  • Excellent people skills including oral and written communication
  • Must be organized and able to multi-task
  • Must maintain a working knowledge of all kitchen equipment
  • ServSafe Certification or willing to obtain certification within 2 months of employment
  • Must be willing to work 4 hours per week at Everyday Café to promote alignment between business entities
  • Highly motivated to provide quality food related programming and services
  • Have a working knowledge of urban food and agricultural practices
  • Must be flexible as this is a new program and roles and responsibilities may change
  • Must have the following clearances: child abuse, criminal history, FBI Fingerprint, mandated reporter training, national sex offender registry verification

Time Commitment: This role and work is consistent with work in the food service industry.  A normal week will average 45 – 50 hours and more on a seasonal basis when catering services, holidays, etc. drive the demand for longer hours.
