Organization and Position Overview:

Center of Life is a growing community empowerment organization based in the Hazelwood neighborhood of Pittsburgh. Once an industrial center for the region, Hazelwood seeks to transition after decades of economic discrimination and governmental neglect. With many families having deep-rooted connections to the neighborhood and surrounding areas, Center of Life’s mission is “to provide families and youth with the life skills, education, training, and resources necessary to be strong and to make their communities strong”. In turn, our vision is “to empower and equip families to bring economic revitalization to their communities”. As such, it is critical that the Director of Programming share a personal commitment to the organization’s mission and goals as well as a dedication to working alongside diverse communities and families in pursuit of education, creative productivity, and career readiness.

As the programmatic leader of the organization, the Director of Programming creates, implements, and assesses an effective operational framework to support all aspects of Center of Life programming including its after-school programs, summer camps, and community engagement. The Director of Programming will maintain an awareness of each program’s capacity for productivity and growth while assessing the necessary resources for maintaining, expanding, and creating all programmatic initiatives. This individual supports the Director of Operations by aligning each programming within the operational framework of the entire organization and community.

Primary Goals, Duties, and Responsibilities

Personnel Management and Development

  • As directed, create and update job descriptions for any proposed and existing Center of Life programmatic personnel
  • Support all interviewing, hiring, and evaluation procedures for program staff in alignment with organization-wide policies and procedures
  • Support all aspects of professional development for Center of Life including orientations, in-service, and retreats

Financial Management

  • As directed by the Director of Operations, direct all programmatic annual budget forecasting to be presented to the Board of Directors
  • Promote regular and accurate tracking of budgetary disbursements among core staff

Operational Communication and Management

  • Establish communication mechanisms that promote the successful and productive operation of the organization including:
    • The setting and agenda of monthly Program Coordinators meeting to encourage cross-program collaboration and innovation as well as weekly, individual program meetings for ongoing development and improvement
    • Communications from outside agencies and partners to request a Center of Life faculty or student performance
    • Ongoing and regular communication between Center of Life and its programming and education partners including, but not limited to: Pittsburgh Public Schools, guardians/families, and universities
  • Support the programmatic implementation of organization-wide policies and procedures that support the centralization of functions used across multiple programs and delegate authority to oversee and supervise these functions
  • Assist core staff in establishing annual goals that are consistent with the strategic mission of the organization
  • Supervise the implementation of comprehensive plans for all Center of Life-wide events
  • Assist Program Coordinators in establishing program-specific operational procedures for participating students and personnel that are congruent with Center of Life-wide procedures

Programming Quality and Maintenance

  • Oversee all aspects of quality of care, safety, and operation of all Center of Life programs, partnerships, and events
  • Create mechanisms for the continued development of programs to serve Center of Life’s mission
  • Supervise the development of age-appropriate and culturally relevant programming curricula that produces personal success as measured through school performance and internal assessments with an emphasis on social justice, hands-on learning, and STEAM activities
  • Maintain communication with school faculty and administration to develop programming curricula that are consistent with Pennsylvania core standard, school curricula, and innovative best practices that encourages hands-on learning, individualized support, career readiness, and family and engagement
  • Coordinate all aspects of collaborative relationships in coordination of services within Pittsburgh Public Schools and community-based organizations
  • Work with Outcomes and Evaluations Coordinator and programming staff to mature curricula in an ongoing cycle of delivery, assessment, and improvement
  • Assess seasonal assessments of individual students and within the context of Center of Life curriculum
  • Develop innovative educational and creative experiences that are individualized, meaningful, and culturally significant
  • Ensure program compliance with quality campaign membership standards set by the Allegheny Partnership for Out-of-School Time (APOST) and Department of Human Services
  • Monitor the physical readiness of all space to house Center of Life programs

Additional Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Maintain regular office hours
  • Meet individually on a weekly basis with Program Coordinators
  • Lead monthly meetings with Program Coordinators for the purpose of cross-program collaboration
  • Meet monthly with the Development team to support implementation of grant-funded activities
  • Meet monthly with the Outcomes and Evaluations Coordinator to routinely assess programs and initiatives
  • Attend Center of Life programming on a weekly basis and all Center of Life-wide events

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree or higher in Education, Sociology, or related field
  • Energetic, flexible, collaborative, and proactive; a team player and leader who can positively and productively impact programmatic excellence
  • Personal commitment to and understanding of social justice with an emphasis on education as a tool for knowledge and liberation for diverse communities
  • Exceptional written, oral, interpersonal, and presentation skills
  • Understanding of local climate for public education, out-of-school time learning, and non-profit agencies
  • Experience working as part of a diverse organization with the goal of supporting predominantly Black families
  • Experience as an employee or board member of a non-profit organization
  • Proven track record of success facilitating transition within a growing organization
  • Excellent judgment and creative problem solving skills including negotiation and conflict resolution skills
  • Superior management and organizational skills
