About the Position:

The Senior Director of Education is responsible for the vision, direction, program and management of the Center for Education, Learning and Research.  Will be an integral part of the future of the Children’s Museum of Pittsburgh’s vision of transforming education through experimentation and research.  The scope of responsibilities include in house programs, outreach, out of school targeted programs and professional development for teachers.  A major focus will be Museum Lab with its integration of the formal education system within the informal space.  This unique platform gives researchers and educators an opportunity to learn what works in education and disseminate the findings to a national audience.

Essential Job Functions::

  • Provides leadership and management to ensure that the mission and core values of the museum are put into practice with a team of highly motivated employees.
  • Motivates and leads a high-performance team; attracts, recruits and retains required members of the education, research and learning team; provides mentoring to direct subordinates as a tool to assist in their career development.
  • Develop, understand and stay current with exhibit and educational opportunities.
  • Develop, maintain and ensure adherence to the appropriate budget.
  • Positively and accurately represent the Children’s Museum to the community at large.

Qualifications:

Education:  Graduate degree in related field preferred.  Minimum of 5 years supervisory/management experience required.

Experience:  Minimum of 5 years supervisory/management experience required.  Experience in Non-Profit arts organization preferred.

Skills: Position requires to act independently with little or no supervision. Identifies and resolves problems in a timely manner and gathers and analyzes information skillfully.  Must have strong analytical skills to assess and evaluate design and cost of appropriate programming for the museum. Development and implementation of age appropriate activities is necessary.

This position requires leadership skills exemplified by initiative and good communication skills, oral and written, within the museum, with Board members, and in the community. A high level of written and oral communication skills and organizational skills is needed.

Physical Requirements, and Equipment Usage:  Predominantly sedentary type position; however, may move about the museum as necessary in normal course of administrative and supervisory activities.

Work Environment, Hours of Work, and Travel Requirements:  Position may require travel. Duties will be performed in a museum environment, which includes interaction with the public and exposure to children and families.

Clearances:  FBI fingerprint, PA Child Abuse (Act 33) and PA Criminal (Act 34) Clearances are required.
