Transformative Climate Change Education

REPORTS TO: Executive Director

TYPE: Full-time; 40-hours/week; Exempt

LOCATION: Pittsburgh, PA – While the Director of Education must reside in the Pittsburgh area, they will work remotely and may set a flexible work schedule (subject to approval by the Executive Director).

Communitopia is a 501c3 environmental nonprofit that provides transformative climate change education to develop today’s climate leaders and advance equitable solutions. We strategically target local communities and constituents who have the most at stake and ensure our programming provides them ample opportunity to be the change. We reach over 350 students/year with direct programming and provide educational resources to over 400 more families through our Climate Solution Kits. Communitopia is currently looking for a full-time Director of Education to join our team and lead our educator and district-level climate literacy and emission reduction efforts. The ideal candidate will be relentlessly driven to tackle climate change on a local level through empowering leaders in the education sector.

Position Duties and Responsibilities:

Communitopia’s Director of Education will oversee all aspects of our district-level and teacher-facing programs. This includes leading our Climate Change Teacher Fellowship program, facilitating climate action planning with school districts, advocating for the passing of school board approved climate action resolutions, designing, implementing and tracking outcomes of all projects, developing content, materials, marketing strategy, promotion and visibility of the programs, as well as networking and creating strategic partnerships to normalize and formalize transformative climate change education in the Pittsburgh-region.

Success in this role looks like:

Program Strategy, Development, Facilitation and Scaling (60%)

  • Develop and implement strategic vision for all educator and district-level climate change program offerings
    With the Executive Director, set and achieve programmatic development goals
  • Conduct stakeholder analysis to best understand how to develop and offer programs
  • Define and develop ecosystem and strategy map of audience engagement and offerings
  • Participate in sub-branding of programs and ensure they support and advance the organization’s mission
  • Position Communitopia as a thought leader in systems thinking, behavior change, sustainability engagement, and sustainability solutions
  • Oversee educator and district-level program development, facilitation, evaluation and scaling

For Communitopia’s Climate Change Teacher Fellowship this may include:

  • Research and apply best practices for systems thinking, behavior change theory, organizational change management theory, and solutionary learning theory to program design and implementation
  • Curriculum theme and content selection and creation, editing, evaluation, securing permissions contracts, visual design, and revision of existing Solutionary Project Based-Learning content
  • Building courses within the appropriate platform of print or digital learning
  • Preparing course and session content to be publicly available, developing additional lesson plans, discussion questions, and action items
  • Scale and facilitate the Climate Change Teacher Fellowship to reach a minimum of 30 educators/semester

For Communitopia’s District-level Climate Action Planning this may include:

  • Research and apply best practices for systems thinking, behavior change theory, organizational change management theory, and solutionary learning theory to program design and implementation
  • Facilitation process creation, editing, evaluation, visual design, and revision of existing “how to guides”, tracking software, and Climate Action Plan Templates
  • Lead district-level leaders and stakeholders through the designing of a Climate Action Plans
  • Scale this program to reach a minimum of two districts/school year

Organizational Visibility, Outreach and Partnerships (20%):

  • Recruit high impact partnerships that lead to the successful scaling of our programs with targeted audiences
  • Represent Communitopia through presentations, public speaking events, networking events, and conferences including presenting at July’s annual Summer Institute for Climate Change Education Conference
  • Support existing partners and area leaders in offering Communitopia programs
  • Serve as primary contact for Educators and District-level leaders
  • Serve as primary contact for programmatic questions, permissions, and feedback
  • Write and distribute a monthly Climate Educator Newsletter with high-quality resources
  • Facilitate six Climate Educator Happy Hours per year with partners to inspire and uplift regional teachers
  • Support the logistics and outreach surrounding our annual Youth Climate Action Summit in collaboration with Communitopia’s Youth Educator

Development (10%)

  • Support Communitopia’s Executive Director with grant-writing, donor relations support, and budget management as it relates to educator and district programming
  • Provide information to inform final grant reports including detailed quantitative and qualitative data on measurable aspects of programming

Organizational Engagement (10%)

  • Conduct formal as well as informal presentations at Communitopia board meetings and other events
  • Support and participate in fundraising initiatives of Communitopia
  • Engage in Communitopia team functions, including events, team meetings, strategic planning, and marketing
  • Other duties as deemed necessary by the Executive Director

Experience and Qualifications Required:

  • Bachelor’s degree related to education (environmental education preferred) OR at least three years experience facilitating adult learners with demonstrated success in reaching programmatic goals
  • K-12 teacher experience desirable and enthusiasm for teaching is required
  • Demonstrated leadership in the facilitation of adult learners
  • Excellent writing and editing skills
  • Experienced developing educational programs and/or designing curriculum
  • Experience with multimedia program design or willingness to research and learn
  • A successful public speaker/presenter/facilitator
  • Excellent organizational skills, specifically with time management and ability to multitask.
  • Must be detail-oriented and self-motivated
  • All Pennsylvania clearances mandatory upon hire
  • Access to a vehicle and valid driver’s license
  • Availability to work some evenings and weekends, as job requires

Salary and Benefits

  • This position will be approximately 40 hr/week and includes benefits, at a competitive rate of pay between $40-$50k/year, commensurate with experience and qualifications
  • 10 paid observed holidays (8 organizational holidays, 2 floating holidays)
  • 12 days paid time off
  • A healthcare stipend ($250/month)
  • A work from home stipend ($50/month)
