The Organization

The York County Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (YCSPCA) is dedicated to providing long-term human and animal services to residents of York County through programs that find permanent, loving homes for displaced and stray animals, help control animal population growth, investigate and prosecute cruelty offenders, and educate the general public about animal wellness and safety.

Established in 1926, the YCSPCA is an independent humane organization with no affiliation with other organizations including the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA). Through its wide variety of programs and services, the YCSPCA has positioned itself as York County’s premier organization for tending to the welfare of not only cats and dogs, but also horses, birds, and other companion animals.

The YCSPCA provides a continuum of services and programs for the homeless animals of York County, including:

  • Spay /Neutering Surgical Center: an affiliate of Humane Alliance, offers low cost, high quality spay/neuter services to all dogs and cats.
  • Microchipping: Provides a permanent form of identification for companion animals in the event that they become lost.
  • SafePet Program: Partnering with ACCESS York and Safe Home of Hanover, the YCSPCA provides temporary shelter for companion animals of domestic abuse victims.
  • Chow For Our Pals: Provides pet food to senior citizens on a fixed income as well as those who are temporarily unemployed or have fallen on hard times.
  • Emergency Disaster Program: The YCSPCA partners with the County of York Department of Emergency Services to provide temporary foster and veterinary care for companion animals whose owners must evacuate their homes due to a natural or man-made disaster.

Position Overview

The new Executive Director will be a visionary leader who can help YCSPCA fulfill its mission and continue on a trajectory of growth and prosperity. With an appreciation for animal welfare, the Executive Director will lead with compassion and a strong desire to connect with community members, staff, and volunteers.

Under the direction of a dedicated Board of Directors (22 members), the Executive Director will oversee the comprehensive and integrated services and programs of the YCSPCA. Managing an operating budget of $2.2 million, a professional staff of 40 (PT/FT) and hundreds of committed volunteers, the Executive Director is the public face of YCSPCA and will serve as the key spokesperson and visible community leader for the organization.

The Executive Director is primarily responsible for the following: 

Leadership and Management

  • Oversees YCSPCA’s operations including staff management, fundraising, fiscal management, and community engagement.
  • Leverages technology to uplift the processes and functions of all areas of the organization.
  • Develops programs to extend the reach of YCSPCA’s community impact through services for both people and companion animals.
  • Manages the Staff with transparency and respect, creating a workplace that is professional and positive.
  • Engages employees in strategic discussions and empowers them to work autonomously, while managing performance and professional development.
  • Identifies and engages with key community leaders, forms strategic alliances, and regularly surveys the broad animal welfare community to keep abreast of new thoughts and strategies.

Shelter and Surgical Center Operations

  • Ability to learn aspects of a HVHQ spay/neuter environment as well as shelter and veterinary operations.
  • Cultivates a culture of understanding, empathy, and nonjudgement towards clientele.
  • Provides complete financial oversight of shelter and surgical center operations in accordance with annual budget.

Revenue Generation and Community Relations

  • Stewards relationships with current philanthropic partners while also identifying and cultivating potential opportunities for advancement and diversification in resource development.
  • Creates and oversees YCSPCA’s fundraising events.
  • Oversees brand strategy; ensures messaging is cohesive and impactful. Prioritizes the role of social media in the communications and outreach efforts of the YCSPCA.
  • Cultivates rapport with key decision-making bodies. Actively engages with community and business decision-makers and practitioners.
  • Up-to-date on pet-friendly legislation while fostering a cooperative relationship with legislators.
  • Represents and serves as the chief spokesperson and advocate for YCSPCA in the community and with media outlets.

Board Relations

  • Develops, maintains, and supports a passionate Board of Directors.
  • Provides on-going education to the Board of Directors on emerging issues and unmet needs.
  • Generates and tracks metrics that monitor the performance of the organization with respect to the mission and key objectives of the organization.
  • Provides leadership in developing organizational, program, and financial plans with the Board of Directors and carries out plans and policies authorized by the Board.
  • Prepares and presents mission and programmatic information at each meeting to ensure Board understanding of the work and people associated with the organization.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

The new Executive Director must be a visionary leader who has a deep understanding of the business practices of a high-functioning nonprofit. This individual must take personal responsibility for driving the organization’s success, demonstrating a high level of ownership for results. All candidates should have exceptional and proven nonprofit management, leadership, relationship management, and resource development experience.

Compassion and appreciation for the exceptional work of animal welfare organizations is essential, as well as a combination of the following skills and attributes:

  • Educational background that includes a Bachelor’s degree. An advanced degree is preferred.
  • Past success working collaboratively with partners, including but not limited to corporate and business leaders, philanthropic leaders, like-minded organizational partners, and a Board of Directors.
  • Previous experience with organizational financial management, including budgeting and forecasting.
  • Ability to apply a broad knowledge of animal sheltering and spay/neuter practices.
  • Ability to learn the current PA humane Laws and PA Dog Laws as they apply to animal sheltering.
  • A successful track record with fundraising from diverse sources.
  • Strong knowledge of how marketing, communications, and public relations can further fundraising efforts, and a track record of using these tools to improve and optimize these efforts. Adept at social media and online marketing.
  • Experience with utilizing technology for organizational efficiency.
  • Demonstrated success in creating and promoting a diverse, inclusive, and respectful workplace environment. Working style that is transparent, encouraging, and collaborative.
  • Experience and confidence with public speaking before a wide range of professionals and community audiences.
  • Ability to exercise a high level of tact and discretion in both internal and external interactions.
  • Advanced strategy and planning skills; demonstrated success with program development.

Performance Objectives

In the near term, the Executive Director will be expected to continue to deliver outstanding outcomes while successfully addressing the following:

  • Initiate a comprehensive strategic planning effort to include the Board and Staff.
  • Assess the internal structures of the organization, to include staffing, technology, financial reporting and communications, to make recommendations for enhancement and upgrades.
  • Evaluate the funding streams associated with each program to understand the financial position of each program.
  • Engage in an organization-wide compensation analysis.

Compensation

This position offers a competitive salary of $120,000 and includes benefit offerings.
