The Oncology Nursing Foundation is a national public, non-profit, tax-exempt, charitable organization headquartered in Pittsburgh, PA and dedicated to oncology nurses from around the world. Since 1981, the Oncology Nursing Foundation, through generous donor support, has provided more than $28 million in funding to support oncology nursing awards, grants, scholarships, and educational initiatives. These funds have played a critical role in improving patient care and advancing the oncology nursing profession.

The Director of Philanthropy and Institutional Partnerships plans, implements, and directs fundraising programs and strategies for unrestricted and restricted funds in support of the Oncology Nursing Foundation’s three mission pillars: education, research, and leadership, as well as special initiatives set by the Foundation.  This role is responsible for relationship-building with individual, corporate and foundation constituents toward cultivating, soliciting, closing and stewarding major, legacy and annual giving, as well as structuring institutional partnerships. Develops and sustains the pipeline for long-term support working independently and in conjunction with the Executive Director and volunteer leadership. As a senior member of the team, sets example for and mentors Foundation staff in meeting department goals in alignment with the Foundation’s mission and strategic plan.

Responsibilities and Duties

Fundraising

  • Ensures the integrity of donor-prospect files both electronic and manual according to industry best practices; assures the donor/prospect record and research system is maintained in meeting the funding needs of the Foundation.
  • Develops annual fundraising plans for each constituent group in relation to fundraising programs and major initiatives articulating timelines for supporting tactics and their execution, and deploys.
    Compiles and analyzes donor-prospect information (propensity and capacity indicators) to inform strategies for cultivation, stewardship, and solicitation.
  • Creates customized plans and conducts regular in-person visits with major individual donors (ONS members and non-members), ONS Chapters, foundation and diverse corporate prospects including pharmaceutical and device companies to cultivate, solicit, close and steward support.
  • Conducts ongoing and robust outreach daily to generate actionable leads; conducts meaningful one-on-one donor-prospect visits monthly.
  • Generates proposals for various constituent relationships for consideration of philanthropy and partnerships to bring cultivation and solicitation to funding closure.
  • Ensures that tracking systems for donor-prospect moves management are operationalized and maintains ongoing record/documentation of contacts and interactions and leads staff team in complying with the systems.
  • Regularly identifies and cultivates new funding sources across all constituent categories leveraging leadership to advance opportunity.
  • Builds awareness for and maintains visibility of legacy giving program incorporating opportunities into outreach and personal visits.
  • Organizes, educates, and leads the efforts of volunteers to support the mission of the Foundation (Board and others); prepares supporting material for their use to advance the activity from prospect review, solicitation follow-up, or engagement.
  • Engages the Foundation trustees and staff in developing new fundraising activities and events to continually expand the donor base and awareness of the Oncology Nursing Foundation including new and non-traditional supporters.
  • Collaborates with ONS Enterprise partners to develop opportunities for awareness building, support and fundraising for the Foundation.

Administrative & Planning

  • Actively participates in budget planning and forecasting, budget monitoring, and remains aware of the financial implications for each fundraising and donor relations activity.
  • Evaluates the overall fundraising efforts and the continuing effectiveness of the development program.
  • Maintains fundraising policies and procedures that ensure compliance with all appropriate federal, state, and local regulations regarding fundraising efforts.
  • Maintains strategic aspects of fundraising and stewardship aspects of fundraising events.
  • Directs prospecting of grant opportunities including the development of grant and sponsorship proposals including approval of grant submissions submitted on behalf of the Oncology Nursing Foundation.

Qualifications and Skills

Bachelor’s degree required; Master’s degree preferred. Five to seven years’ experience in fundraising, campaign leadership, Board and volunteer management, and strategic planning; or equivalent combination of education and experience. Planned giving experience preferred along with a proven track record for closing 6-figure gifts and structuring gift agreements.
