STEM Coding Lab
Website STEM Coding Lab
STEM Coding Lab is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that teaches computer skills to children in underserved communities in order to better prepare them to compete and succeed in the digital world. We believe that all children should have the opportunity to succeed regardless of income levels.
Pittsburgh Public Schools is hosting a five-week summer camp called Summer Dreamers Academy for students in grades K-6. The camp runs from June 24th through July 23rd. STEM Coding Lab will be offering a webpage development workshop to students entering grades 4 & 5 at King Elementary on the Northside. Students will learn the basics of HTML and CSS, the coding languages used for webpage development.
Volunteers will assist & support the students as they learn how to build their own webpage. Students will research and/or interview a person or place of interest in their neighborhood. They will draw up an outline for their webpage and, after learning the basics of HTML & CSS, they will begin building their webpage.
While experience in coding or computer science is a plus, volunteers/mentors do not have to have a computer science background. They must, however, have a desire & willingness to learn along with our students.
Learning to code can be fun & empowering but also challenging. The volunteers/mentors at STEM Coding Lab are critical to our students’ success, providing encouragement, guidance & support – having positive adult relationships can be life-changing for our children and crucial to their progress.
We ask our volunteers/mentors to make at least a one day per week commitment (5 days this summer). Classes run from 1:15 – 4:00pm. All mentors working directly with our children are required to obtain the following clearances:
- FBI Federal Criminal History Clearance
- Act 34 State Criminal Clearance
- Act 151 PA Child Abuse Clearance
Volunteer training will be provided at STEM Coding Lab prior to summer camp.
