Neville Island is in the Ohio River Northwest of downtown Pittsburgh. Neville Island and the communities nearby have a significant amount of heavy industry that produces air pollution. ACCAN first organized to try to get better regulation of the Shenango Coke Works, which was located on Neville Island. Shenango produced extremely toxic air pollution that blew into adjacent residential communities. It eventually closed in 2016. We believe that the work of ACCAN and its partners factored into Shenango's decision to close.
After Shenango's closure, ACCAN, recognizing that there were many other sources of air pollution in the Neville Island area, continued its work to get better regulation of these sources. There are currently seven Major Sources of air pollution in this area and at least 20 other significant sources. With the help of technology tools provided by our partners, we are able to document pollution events and submit this documentation to the Allegheny County Health Department, the agency responsible for air quality regulation in Allegheny County .
Since getting better regulation of air polluters can take years, we have partnered with an organization that helps people get some protection from the outdoor air pollution by improving their indoor air quality. This is accomplished by the use of portable air cleaners, HVAC modifications to improve air filtration and other means. Since 2021 we have provided this assistance to over 40 residents.
Additional information about ACCAN's activities can be found on our websites (accan.org and accancamera.org).
