Since its founding in 1889 the Braddock Carnegie Library has positively impacted the lives of area residents. Andrew Carnegie designed the building for his workers “and generations to come” as a grand community center with recreation facilities including a gymnasium, swimming pool, billiards hall, and a large bathhouse that served employees of the nearby Carnegie steel mill, most of whom lacked indoor plumbing in their homes.
Over the 20th century, Braddock and the surrounding region saw a dramatic economic decline in tandem with the American steel industry and other socio-economic factors. The community’s needs changed considerably, and the fate of the library was emblematic of the rise and fall of the larger region. The building suffered greatly from the regional decline and a lack of management. On the verge of demolition, it was rescued by local residents who refused to abandon its history and potential to serve future generations.
In 1979, the group incorporated as a 501c3 not-for-profit organization now known as the Braddock Carnegie Library Association (BCLA). After gaining ownership of the building, the group repaired the physical structure enough to reopen a limited portion of the building. With minimal resources, the BCLA management and board have since worked diligently to further repair and maintain the structure, and to fill its space with programs and services in response to the needs of local residents. The BCLA has expanded on Carnegie’s vision of a “center of light and learning” by providing tools for dynamic, engaged learning, and resources for meeting life’s challenges to the surrounding community.
The BCLA is a member in good standing of the Allegheny County Library Association. We achieved National Historic Landmark Status in 2012 and since then we have worked toward the goals outlined in our strategic plan: good governance, quality and consistent programming, sound finances and forward budget building, and developing a building master plan and facilities.
The BCLA is a dynamic and ever-evolving center of the community. The BCLA responds to community needs and serves as a space of safety, healing and growth for the wider area. We accomplish this in traditional ways, by providing computer and internet access and a diverse collection of library materials and also through an innovative alternative lending collection and a variety of teaching-artist programs that engage and empower the community.
