Touchstone’s Mission:The mission of Touchstone Center for Crafts is to advance excellence in arts and craft by educating and encouraging individuals to develop technical skills, good design and innovative artistic expression.
Touchstone’s Vision:Touchstone will be a nationally recognized institution, respected for our regional impact; the excellence, value and accessibility of our programs; the creative accomplishments of our faculty, students and staff and our contributions to the quality of life of the region.
Organization Overview:Touchstone Center for Crafts is an important arts & culture institution in Fayette County, bringing students & instructors from around the country to experience immersive learning across various craft disciplines (blacksmithing, ceramics, metals/jewelry, glass, drawing/painting, & various special topics). Touchstone is the only residential craft school in PA & among only a handful across the country. Since 1972, Touchstone has continually provided valuable learning experiences to adult, teen, & youth workshop participants as well as studio interns & Artists-In-Residence in our studios. Touchstone offers income & professional exposure opportunities for artists as workshop instructors & through our professional galleries. Additionally, Touchstone acts as a resource to the surrounding region as well as the greater Pittsburgh area through community engagement activities in schools, community festivals, offering exhibition & meeting spaces, Act48 credits for PA teachers, & opportunities for specialized instruction & group activities in our studios. Touchstone is committed to connecting with other arts and other organizations & finding creative ways to cross-program for mutual benefit (Falingwater, Associated Artists of Pittsburgh, Rivers of Steel, Art in the Airport, ReMake Learning, etc.). We keep traditional techniques alive while also pushing craft techniques forward into the 21stCentury. Touchstone works hard to seek funding that allows us to keep our workshops affordable for all. It is often those who could benefit from them the most that can afford them the least.
