The Pennsylvania Association of Area Agencies on Aging (P4A), the trade association for Pennsylvania's 52 Area Agencies on Aging (AAAs), is recruiting a Strategy Director. The position will lead strategic and tactical research, design, and planning initiatives that are guided by the following self-defined characteristics of a thriving AAA network:

The ideal candidate has leadership experience working with or within the AAA environment and/or ecosystem, as well as with/within peripheral industries and systems, which may include healthcare, public health, or other human services fields. The Strategy Director will further define the strategic priorities, goals, and objectives of P4A and the AAA network through visionary guidance, high-level thinking, and action. A passion for and demonstrated experience in fostering collaborative public-private partnerships and leading successful programs, projects, and initiatives that involve strategic thought, implementation planning, public policy, market insights, and multi-stakeholder involvement is critical.

The Strategy Director will report to P4A's Executive Director and will deliver strategic insight and foresight to all aspects of the organization and network, including in areas of policy and political advocacy, traditional and alternative revenue streams, quality assurance, and future areas of opportunity and growth for P4A and constituent AAAs. The Strategy Director will have a central role in developing the network's short- and long-term strategies, helping design and implement measurable and actionable objectives to realize strategic imperatives.

The emphasis on building rapport and relationships with individuals and groups requires an articulate and influential communication style. Learning quickly and thoroughly while continually recognizing and adapting to changing conditions is also essential. The job requires the ability to act independently, the confidence to handle tactical challenges, and a demonstrated commitment to quality and success.

The responsibilities of this position include: 

  • Adopting and refining a new strategic planning and implementation process for P4A and the network
  • Being a well-informed strategic thought partner for P4A and AAA leadership
  • Measuring and monitoring the performance of existing strategic priorities
  • Ensuring that all activities of P4A and the network are strategically guided and informed; identifying those that are not
  • Helping P4A and AAAs understand the root causes of challenges and lead the development of immediate, systemic, regulatory, and structural solutions
  • Expanding AAA capacities and capabilities to meet current and future needs and opportunities
  • Fostering future- and solution-oriented approaches to aging and aging services that can inspire any organization serving older Pennsylvanians
  • Helping build and enhance strategic relationships and partnerships within and beyond the network
  • Strengthening the network's political and policy advocacy efforts
  • Improving service quality and consistency among all of Pennsylvania's AAAs

Applicants must possess a Master's degree in public health, social work, gerontology, business, public administration, or related field, plus 3-5 years of professional experience involving organizational and/or network-oriented strategies in areas such as strategic planning, financial sustainability, and stakeholder engagement; or a Bachelor's degree in Business Administration, Public Administration, Social Work or related field with 5-7 years of related professional experience. Demonstrated high-level experience may be substituted for educational requirements. Must know about planning, implementation, grant research, and management.

Excellent verbal and written communication skills and advanced computer skills are required. A valid PA Driver's License and access to reliable transportation are also required.
