Service Summary

The AmeriCorps LEAD Member will be hands-on with the youth to implement curriculum and programming on a day to day basis. Curriculum will focus on multi-faceted literacy programming to include reading, writing, social-emotional learning, career development and leadership skills. This role is responsible for the safety of all program participants as well as relationship building. This role will ensure that they follow all DHS Chapter 3270 Regulations and BGCA Safety requirements.

Essential Functions

  • Implement educational programming to include: Literacy, Social-Emotional Learning, STEM, art, mentoring, athletics and activities.
  • Develop personal learning plans for youth utilizing the literacy platform Lexia and provide one-on-one and small group literacy instruction
  • Implement the evidence-based SEL program Positive Action and assist with program reports
  • Ensure the safety of all program participants while in care.
  • Encourage recruitment with youth and families to assist with communications in the community of what programs, services, and outreach BGCWPA has to offer.
  • Assist with annual youth evaluations.
  • Promote and stimulate membership in the Clubhouse through programs, services, and outreach activities. 
  • Support monthly incentive programs that focus on literacy, STEM, Art, Mentoring, Athletics and Social/Emotional Learning activities. 
  • Implement educational and all out of school time programs that are stimulating and age appropriate for all members.
  • Provide an environment that promotes creativity and exploration through learning
  • Offer input regarding department programs, in partnership with the approval of Program Manager
  • Observe and report any maintenance and operation concerns of the department’s physical property, ensuring Club member safety at all times to the Clubhouse director.

Requirements/Qualifications

  • Must be at least 17 years of age
  • High school graduate or GED recipient, or working towards attaining during the term of service
  • US Citizenship or permanent residency status (Green Card)
  • At least one year of experience working with children.
  • The ability to create strong relationships with youth in a short period of time
  • An interest in a variety of youth programs including technology, art, sports, STEM, mentoring and recreation
  • Advanced positive customer service skills needed.
  • Must complete a health physical and TB test
  • 3 letters of Reference needed upon selection 
  • Clearances Act 33, Act 34, Act 151 and NSOR letter. Complete the National Service Criminal History Check.
  • Mandated Reporter Certification within 30 days of hire
  • Be able to attend a minimum of 12 hours of training per year.
  • Complete CPR, Pediatric First Aid during orientation.
  • Strong time management, organization, and project prioritization skills are a must
  • Proficient in Google Suite.
  • The usual and customary methods of performing the jobs function require the following physical demands: lifting & carrying up to 50 pounds, pushing, any/or pulling, climbing to include steps, balancing, stooping, standing, sitting, kneeling, crawling, crouching, and signification fine fingered dexterity. Ability to tolerate environmental conditions: air conditioning, heat, dust fumes, noise, close quarters, etc.
  • Perform all additional duties and tasks assigned by leadership/supervisors. 

Term of Service/Time Requirements

Commitment to serve 8 months (October-June or January-August) for the school-year term or 3 months during the summer term (June-August)

  • Half-Time members to serve 900 hours (27 hours per week)
  • Quarter-Time members to serve 450 hours (14 hours per week)
  • Minimum-Time (summer) members to serve 300 hours (30-32 hours per week)

Members will also be required to participate in AmeriCorps Week activities and local service projects/events

Members will be required to participate in a week-long orientation/training prior to their service term

Benefits of AmeriCorps Service

Members will receive a biweekly living allowance

  • Half-Time Members can receive up tp $8,100
  • Quarter-Time Members can receive up to $4,050
  • Minimum-Time Members can receive up to $2,700

Education Award: After successfully completing your AmeriCorps term of service and enrolling in the National Service Trust, you are eligible to receive the Segal AmeriCorps Education Award. You can use the award to repay qualified student loans and to pay current or future (within 7 years) educational expenses at eligible institutions of higher education and training programs.

  • Half-Time Members can receive up to $3,247.50
  • Quarter-Time Members can receive up to $1,718.25
  • Minimum-Time Members can receive up to $1,374.60

As an AmeriCorps member you may be eligible for forbearance on your qualified student loans during your term of service.

Upon service completion, receive access to AmeriCorps Alumni benefits and resources.
