The Retail Manager will be responsible for developing and implementing Pittsburgh Glass Center’s (PGC) retail vision as a key component of PGC’s audience engagement strategy and earned revenue model. 

This includes articulating all aspects of running a profitable retail operation (day-to-day operations, sales plans, profit objectives, operating budget, customer service standards, structure), collaborating with other PGC team members and inspiring a strong retail presence, and ensuring that the Shop consistently reflects and promotes the retail vision in support of the PGC’s mission and brand. This position works closely with the Director of Creative Projects. 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Implement a Retail Strategy that positions the Shop at PGC as a key component of PGC’s earned revenue model, audience engagement strategy and brand objectives.

  • Supervise and direct the merchandising and visual presentation of products according to the Shop fixturing plan, layout, keeping in alignment with the retail vision
  • Manage the POS, purchase order and inventory management systems to prepare sales and inventory reports for PGC management and budget departments, as needed
  • Provide structure and retail leadership, performing at a high level of customer service, product and designer knowledge, and as a key member of PGC’s Front-of-House team 
  • Collaborate with PGC’s marketing and development teams to support an effective audience and membership development strategy
  • Collaborate with PGC’s leadership team to leverage exhibition schedules, events, pop-ups, activations, in line with external retail calendar and other activities relevant to maximizing opportunities to grow the business and connect with the customer
  • Initiate, organize and produce in-store special events that promote the PGC, its exhibitions and seasonal holidays. Activate retail experience as gateway to deeper PGC visitor experience, including conceptualizing and developing mobile PGC Shop activations throughout the local community

Oversee all Buying, Merchandising and Product Development decisions.

  • In conjunction with the Director of Creative Projects, define and establish methods, processes and tools for a product assortment and buying strategy to achieve the desired income & expense goals. Maintain profitability while promoting and communicating the vision of the store
  • Work with the Director of Creative Projects to plan and select merchandise assortment for the Store. Buy, price and ensure the re-ordering of a merchandise assortment, with special attention given to the event/program/exhibition calendar and holidays
  • Oversee receiving of all incoming inventory to assess the condition of each product 
  • Maintain relationships with vendors to assure proper stock levels and pricing advantages
  • Develop the merchandising and visual presentation of products in alignment with the retail store image and vision and according to the fixturing plan, footprint and layout
  • Stay abreast of developments in retail, customer experience and technology

Drive an Excellent Level of Customer Service. 

  • Create a visitor-centric culture by leading through example and exceeding service expectations
  • Provide customer service by greeting and assisting customers and responding to customer inquiries and complaints
  • Know the customers and understand their needs. Listen, learn, and connect with them personally and emotionally to enhance store offerings/services. Becomes knowledgeable about current exhibitions and studio classes to be able to answer customer questions
  • Develop and implement a customer cultivation and rewards program for The Shop that aligns with PGC-wide strategies
  • Build and maintain a cohesive and supportive retail team that is on-brand, agile and resilient in conveying the mission of PGC and the vision of the store

Administer Operations & General Management of all retail

  • Ensures a clean, organized, well-stocked sales area at all times both virtually in online retail and in person on-site at PGC.
  • Updates and maintains PGC’s online store to support e-commerce and web activities.
  • Works with PGC’s marketing department to implement marketing and social media for retail
  • Contacts artists to schedule receipt of new consignment work or to return slow-selling merchandise
  • Confirms items have been recorded accurately in point-of-sale system; customer data is collected and recorded correctly
  • Controls owned inventory turnover through regular buys and markdowns
  • Manages consignment inventory through consistent communication with artists regarding the popularity of their work
  • Researches new merchandise and reviews new artist submissions for the Store
  • Manages the Store operations on-site, including packing, shipping and returns

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Demonstrated ability to formulate and execute a retail vision in support of an organization’s strategic plan and goals.  
  • Exceptional financial and analytical skills including retail accounting, budget preparation, inventory control, and point of sale systems
  • Must be able to work independently, under pressure, and resolve complex problems as they arise. Strong time management skills to complete assigned projects under required schedule
  • Word processing including proficiency with Word, Excel and Gmail
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills

Education/Experience Requirements 

Five years of sales/management experience including buying and visual merchandising; commensurate experience or education will be considered.

Salary & Benefits

The salary for the full-time position is $45,000 - $50,000 depending on experience. Additional benefits include health, dental, and vision insurance, paid vacation, sick time, and complimentary classes at PGC. PGC also contributes to an employer matched Simple IRA for employees after they've been on staff for one year.
