The Advocacy Coordinator is responsible for supporting and advancing the Food Bank’s annual advocacy policy priorities under the leadership of the Government Affairs Director. This role will cultivate and manage key relationships with policymakers at the federal, state, and local level, as well as their staff members. This role will educate and train Food Bank staff, the Board of Directors, network partners, people we serve, and other stakeholders about the extent and causes of hunger in southwestern Pennsylvania, the role of government in addressing the problem, and how to properly advocate to our elected officials. The Advocacy Coordinator will mobilize support for government policies and programs that improve the food security of food insecure residents and facilitate grassroots advocacy actions as issues arise.

Responsibilities

  • Coordinate the Food Bank's advocacy activities, including but not limited to:
  • Develop and send email action alerts to engage Food Bank stakeholders and supporters in meaningful advocacy action
  • Develop and create content for internal and external communications from the government affairs team
  • Organize advocacy campaigns including paper plate campaign, letter/message-writing campaign, call-in days, and organizational sign-on letter opportunities
  • Participate in coalitions and work with other organizations on regional, statewide, and federal strategy and tactics.
  • Participate in advocacy meetings/calls with elected officials, with occasional travel to Washington D.C., Harrisburg, and district offices around the 11-county service area.
  • Recruit, train, and coordinate the activities of Hunger Education and Advocacy Team (HEAT) members.
  • Cross-Departmental Coordination
  • Liaise with Marketing and Communications team
  • Manage digital and print advocacy resources, such asHunger Profiles, Fact Sheets, etc.
  • Maintain and update Food Bank’s digital advocacy presence – website, blog, social media
  • Write and publish op-eds and letters to the editor
  • Interview with reporters for relevant articles or news segments
  • Work with and across all Food Bank functional areas and departments to:
  • Schedule and coordinate elected and government official site visits to Food Bank, network partners, distributions, and/or school programs
  • Gather stories from people we serve and agency representatives to use in advocacy materials and efforts with elected officials and/or staff
  • Identify people who we serve, volunteers, staff, and/or agency representatives for advocacy opportunities (including presentation of testimony, writing letters to the editor or op/eds, and district office visits)
  • Better understand the intricate workings of all Food Bank teams to best represent the organization to elected officials and community leaders
  • Give advocacy and Food Bank presentations to volunteer groups, staff members, the Board of Directors, civic organizations, political groups, college groups, and others.
  • Conduct outreach to network partners, Partner Distribution Organizations (PDOs), Redistribution Organizations (RDOs), and other larger partners to engage them in anti-hunger advocacy efforts.
  • Track Government Affairs data on Salesforce or other CRM platforms
  • Track government official contact or advocacy actions
  • Maintain governmental staff contact information
  • Track agency presence in legislative districts
  • Prepare reports for Feeding America (NAR, Advocacy Hall of Fame), grants and others as necessary

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree in Political Science, Public Administration, Government, or other social science academic program
  • Three years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills
  • Ability to use analytical thinking and problem-solving skills to identify and implement solutions to problems
  • Knowledge of various levels of government structure and processes: including budget process, legislative committee structure, executive and legislative appropriations process
  • Knowledge of Pennsylvania, Allegheny County and City of Pittsburgh governmental structure and processes preferred
  • Experience with advocating or lobbying to elected officials, preferred
  • Strong organizational skills and ability to multi-task and work independently
  • Ability to present information in a format suitable to various individuals, groups, and stakeholders
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment with multifaceted demands; Ability to successfully handle multiple projects and meet critical deadlines
  • Ability, experience and willingness to work with diverse populations
  • Flexibility to attend evening and/or weekend meetings and/or events as needed
  • Strong computer skills
  • Experience with Microsoft 365 suite
  • Strong Excel capabilities
  • Capable of performing basic-to-intermediate data analysis
  • Experience with Salesforce and Geographic Information Systems (GIS) preferred.
  • Valid driver’s license
  • Must be able to lift 50 pounds and stand for long periods of time
  • Act 33 & Act 34 Clearances
