The University of Pittsburgh's Division of Philanthropic & Alumni Engagement is seeking a Major Gifts Officer (MGO) to join a progressive team central in central major gifts. This position is expected to fundraise from prospective donors evaluated with the capacity to donate $100,000 or more as well as build a diverse and sustainable portfolio. In order to effectively manage critical relationships with current and prospective donors to meet both short and long-term fundraising objectives for the University, the MGO will consistently initiate contacts with potential major donors, develop and execute strategies to cultivate and maintain relationships, and solicit and close major gifts. Must be willing to travel at least 30% of the time. Flexible hybrid and/or remote work opportunities may be available for this position.


The primary objective of a MGO is to develop long-term relationships built on a firm understanding of donors' interests, passions, and values. The responsibilities are focused on fundraising from prospective donors evaluated with the capacity to donate$100,000 or more and include:

securing face-to-face meetings to confirm the giving capacity of the potential donor and to assess their interest in providing philanthropic support to the University.

designing and completing cultivation tasks

collaborating with colleagues in other divisions, including those within the broader Office of Philanthropic & Alumni Engagement, other academic units, Athletics, and other units across the university

creating and executing complex multi-dimensional strategies to involve prospects across Pitt Business and/or other entities within Pitt that lead to major gifts

creating endowment and pledge agreements

creating and implementing stewardship strategies

maintaining accurate records in PAE's database system

Experience with or knowledge of underserved populations is a plus

Bachelor's degree required. Master's preferred. Superior verbal and written skills. Must be able and willing to travel extensively outside of the Western Pennsylvania area.


At least 5-7 years in fund raising or comparable experience. Internship in a college or university development operation may be substituted for professional work experience. Knowledge and experience building strategic partnerships internally and externally and leveraging relationships to advance strategic objectives.
