Without volunteers, Animal Friends simply could not be the progressive, successful organization it is today. Our dedicated volunteers are committed to spending time with our residents, bringing pet therapy to those who need it most, lending a hand at a low-cost clinic, greeting guests at our signature gala and everything in between.

The Volunteer Program Manager will lead our efforts to maintain 100% integration of volunteers into our programs and facilitates approximately 300,000 hours of donated volunteer service each year. These may include, but would not be limited to individual volunteers, corporate days of service, and college volunteer endeavors. They will exercise strong decision-making skills and partner with program leads and various members of senior leadership to further enhance our life saving work though volunteerism.   

We are looking for a strategic thinker, who has experience coordinating volunteer services, that is ready for a leadership position. The ideal candidate must have strong interpersonal skills and the ability to effectively manage administrative support staff.   

Essential Functions

  • Develops and implements recruiting, onboarding, training, and retention strategy to help streamline and grow the volunteer program. This may include updating content for training programs and assisting in skills gap analysis. 
  • Administers the Volunteer Management System (Volgistics) and trains support staff on use. 
  • Partners with Development leaders to facilitate meaningful Corporate Days of Service.
  • Partners with Human Resources to manage any behaviors that do not align with our Code of Conduct or Workplace Culture Statement in a fair, transparent, and consistent manner.  
  • Oversees and coaches support staff to ensure excellent customer service for volunteers and visitors alike. 
  • Drives effective mass email communications reaching over 2,000 active volunteers to advertise new volunteer opportunities and share important updates
  • Partners with Communications to enhance the Volunteer Corp’s market presence online, in-print and through in person events 
  • Grows strategic partnerships with various groups or community partners to drive volunteerism.
  • Collects and analyzes data report on various volunteer statics such as Volunteer Hours, Retention Rate, Volunteer Attendance, FTE Equivalent etc. 
  • Develops and plans Volunteer Appreciate events including but not limited to an annual holiday party and an awards dinner
  • Champions opportunities for relationship building, both among fellow volunteers and between volunteers and employees to enhance a united Animal Friends
  • Maintains volunteer handbook and codes of conduct
  • Other duties as assigned


  • Bachelor’s Degree preferred 
  • Volunteer administrator certification preferred 
  • At least two years’ experience in a volunteer coordination role required
  • Prior management or supervisory experience preferred 
  • Working knowledge of Volunteer Management Software (preferably Volgistics) required
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office products including Outlook, Word, Excel and Teams 
  • Demonstrable ability to influence decision-making with fellow leaders and key stakeholders
  • Courage to make tough decisions and deliver difficult messages with professionalism and poise
  • Comfortable working in ambiguous situations with competing priorities
  • Solid expertise in developing solutions based upon facts/data
  • Consultative style and approach with the ability to develop credible relationships 
  • Access to dependable transportation and openness to local travel
  • Valid driver’s license preferred
  • Flexible work availability preferred; organization is a 24hr operation, which may require individuals to work evenings, weekends, holidays and/or special events at times, including Black Tie & Tails
  • The physical demands for this job are as follows: Medium Work – Medium work is defined as lifting 50lbs maximum with frequent lifting and/or carrying of objects weighing up to 35lbs
