The Abolitionist Law Center is looking for an organizer for its new and ongoing campaigns focused on Philadelphia County jails. The organizer would work with the ALC organizing team to design and co-lead campaigns that will protect people inside jails and reduce the overall jail population, and the organizer would also coordinate advocacy against the county jails and take part in related organizing efforts of ALC and its partners. ALC is an abolition-rooted organization that directly challenges institutions in the courts and in our campaigns, and our organizing centers on people most impacted by mass incarceration and policing.  

Candidates must be:

  • Committed to shrinking the police and prison systems
  • Interested in organizing people impacted by jails and prisons (formerly incarcerated and family members of the incarcerated)
  • Able to build relationships well, both with local community members and allied groups and coalitions
  • Able to lead a targeted advocacy campaign and coordinate both organizing and messaging
  • Proficient in managing calendars, correspondence, and record-keeping
  • Proficient in basic office software (GSuites, Microsoft Office, etc)

Ideal qualifications:

  • Understanding of prison systems and local municipal political structures
  • Experience working with and prioritizing communities, people and leadership directly impacted by mass incarceration and over-policing  
  • Strong analysis and critique of mass incarceration, prisons and the carceral state. 
  • At least 1 year of organizing experience in cities 

Salary and Benefits: This position will be based in Philadelphia and is expected to require both remote (work-from-home) and in-person (office) work. The compensation range for the position is $60,000 per year. Health benefits include the option of a 100% employer-paid health insurance plan, or a Health Reimbursement Arrangement (HRA) benefit of up to $450/mth. All full-time staff also have 35 days (280hrs) of paid time off annually.
